In the end, the tepid response to the Facebook IPO was probably the best response, one that reflects a healthy way of looking at hot companies and one that just might save us from another bubble.

The positive spin is that the underwriters, chiefly Morgan Stanley, really nailed the IPO price. A big one-day gain could've been spun as a reflection of healthy retail demand for a ground breaking company. Deep down that's what a lot of people were hoping for, but it wasn't to be, so the best interpretation of events is that the deal was fair for the issuer and investors.

A couple of days ago, I discussed the long-term investment thesis for JPMorgan (JPM) in the wake of the disclosed $2 billion loss. Since then the loss appears to have grown, which is not unforeseen. But other recent disclosures are more unsettling.

I don't know about you, but here in Texas I can barely drive a mile without passing a JPMorgan Chase (JPM) branch. They're even inside the grocery stores. Simply being everywhere doesn't make a bank safe, of course. As we learned last week, traders in London just cost JPMorgan $2 billion and possibly more! Fitch Ratings downgraded its credit rating one notch to A-plus, and it looks like Moody's may cut the bank, too.

Dave Whelan's rentaquote tendencies appear to have created the impression that Roberto Martínez is the frontrunner for the Liverpool job, though Fenway Sports Group are spreading their net wider than the Wigan manager – much wider. In fact any shortlist that contains Martínez and Brendan Rodgers, plus Jürgen Klopp, Didier Deschamps, André Villas-Boas, Fabio Capello and Pep Guardiola is not really a shortlist at all, more of a supermarket sweep of all Europe's brightest young managers....
